Spiders Sprint Past St. Bonaventure on Senior Night
02/21/2026 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — The four healthy Spiders who were honored in a pre-game Senior Night ceremony all made major contributions as the Spiders defeated St. Bonaventure 99-94 Saturday in the Robins Center. Graduate students Will Johnston (21) and AJ Lopez both reached the 20-point mark, senior Mike Walz had a team-high and career-high six assists to go with his eight points, and senior Apostolos Roumoglou led UR with six rebounds while adding six points, three assists and two blocks as Richmond swept its home-and-home series against St. Bonaventure.
"I'm really happy for AP. He played great," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney of Roumoglou, who had totaled three minutes over the previous four games. "He fought like crazy [on defense] and then his offense helped us as well. I'm really happy for him."
Richmond is now 15-13 overall this season and 5-10 in A-10 play. The Spiders are 2-2 in their last four games following a six-game losing streak.
Richmond's 99 points were its third most ever in a regulation (non-overtime) A-10 game, trailing on Jan. 28, 2017 vs Duquesne (101-90) and Jan. 25, 2012 vs Fordham (102-58). The Spiders shot a season-best 56.1% from the field and made 14 three-pointers, tied for their most in a game this year.
"I thought we shared the ball and I thought we pushed the pace," said Mooney. "I thought we were able to get some easier shots and played a great game offensively. We have work to do defensively, but I thought we played a great game offensively."
"I thought we moved the ball really well the entirety of the game," said Johnston. "The past couple of games we've only done it in spurts, but today I think we did a really good job the entire game."
Both teams shot well early, with UR opening 8-12 from the field and the Bonnies making nine of their first 13 field goal attempts. St. Bonaventure's biggest edge came nine minutes before halftime at 27-20. The Spiders were able to chip away at the deficit, shrinking it to just two at halftime (46-44) when Aiden Argabright beat the first-half buzzer with a driving layup. A team-high 12 of Argabright's 14 points came in the 1st half.
Richmond used an 8-0 run to re-take the lead at 54-50 early in the second half, but St. Bonaventure pulled back ahead following five straight points from guard Buddy Simmons, who finished with a game-high 30 points. The Spiders answer came in the form of Roumoglou, who started and ended a 9-0 run with three-pointers that turned UR's 70-68 deficit into a 77-70 lead with 9:21 to play.
The Bonnies were able to cut the lead to three twice down the stretch but could pull no closer as UR held on to win consecutive games in the series for the first time since a three-game win streak vs SBU from 2014-15.
Richmond will have a midweek bye before traveling to Chicago for a road matchup at Loyola Saturday at 4 PM on CBS Sports Network.
"I couldn't tell you what our standing [in the A-10] is right now. We know it's not where we want to be," said Johnston. "But we're just focusing one game at a time."
