KESWICK, Va. — Junior Katie Magner carded an even-par 72 in the second round Monday afternoon to lead Richmond to a fourth-place finish at the nine-team, 36-hole Keswick Cup at Keswick Golf Club.
The Spiders improved seven shots between rounds, following an opening-round 18-over 306 with an 11-over 299 to complete the event at 29-over par (605). Richmond finished eight shots behind third-place Jacksonville State and four ahead of Cincinnati and Longwood, who tied for fifth.
Virginia won the nine-team event at 25-under par, finishing 24 shots ahead of runner-up Virginia Tech.
Magner rebounded from an opening-round 79 with three birdies in Round 2, playing her final 11 holes in 2-under par. She climbed 16 positions during the second round to tie for 22nd in the field of 57 at 7-over par (151).
"I was just able to stay in the moment and take it one shot at a time," Magner said. "I had one really bad hole in the first round but I didn't let that get to me. I was birdie-free the first round and so just staying patient with my putting the whole day was crucial."
Sophomore Addie Doroh followed an opening-round 77 with a 3-over 75 and tied for 27th at 8-over par (152).
Freshmen Carter Bransford and Stella Moritz tied for 30th at 10-over par (154). Bransford recorded rounds of 76 and 78, while Moritz improved six shots from an opening-round 80 with a 2-over 74 in Round 2.
Senior Maya Beasley tied for 33rd at 11-over par (155) following rounds of 74 and 81.
Competing as individuals, senior Heather Appelson finished 50th at 25-over par (169), while junior Caroline Thompson placed 54th at 31-over par (175).
The Keswick Cup concluded Richmond's fall schedule. The Spiders will return to competition Jan. 25-26 at the Sea Best Invitational at San Jose Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla.
"The fall went pretty well," Magner said. "Some bad rounds here and there but for the most part it was solid and there is a lot of good to build off of. Our team is meshing really well together and I think there is a lot to look forward to come January."
