RICHMOND, Va. — Paige West scored in the 15th minute and Emma Newman added a second-half goal as Richmond defeated VCU 2-0 Thursday at President's Field at River Road, keeping the Spiders unbeaten at home this season and securing their first win over their intracity rival since 2019.
Richmond improved to 8-3-5 overall and 3-3-2 in Atlantic 10 play, and moved to 6-0-3 at home. The win was Richmond's first conference victory by multiple goals since a 2-0 win at George Mason on Oct. 20, 2024.
The Spiders created several chances in the opening half. Kingsley Hughes and Jess Moylan each sent a shot wide before West put Richmond ahead at 14:53. West collected a brilliant service from Julia Lishia and snuck it past the VCU keeper for her second goal of the season. Hughes collected a 50-50 ball and found Lishia to start the scoring sequence, with both Hughes and Lishia earning their third assists of the season.
VCU threatened UR's 1-0 lead immediately after halftime, generating three shots on goal in the opening four minutes of the second half, but Spiders keeper Isabel Seifert stopped each attempt. Richmond doubled its lead in the 57th minute when Newman collected a loose ball following a tackle by Camden Henard, pressed towards the 18-yard box, cut inside onto her right foot and fired a shot into the side netting. It was the second goal of the season for Newman, who led UR with six goals a season ago.
The Rams continued to test Seifert, who made three more saves to finish with six in the half and preserve the shutout, allowing Richmond to snap a five-game losing streak in its series vs the Rams. At 8-3-5, with two regular season games remaining, Richmond has already secured its most wins in a season since going 9-9-1 in 2016.
Up next for Richmond is a road matchup at the Rams of Rhode Island Sunday at 1 p.m.
