RICHMOND, Va. — Sophomore Jess Moylan scored in the 10th minute and Richmond held Davidson scoreless the rest of the way to earn a 1-0 Atlantic 10 victory Sunday at President's Field at River Road.
Richmond improved to 7-2-5 overall and 2-2-2 in conference play, snapping a two-match losing streak and remaining unbeaten at home this season at 5-0-3. Davidson fell to 5-7-2 overall and 1-4-1 in A-10 play.
The Spiders struck at the 9:06 mark when Moylan found the back of the net off an assist from Morgane Zinn. The goal was Moylan's second of the season, with her first coming in Richmond's 1-0 season-opening victory over Wofford on Aug. 16. Zinn's assist was her team-leading fifth of the year, bringing her season point total to 15.
Richmond controlled the opening stages of the match, with Camden Henard forcing Davidson goalkeeper Grace Stair into a save in the seventh minute before Moylan broke through less than three minutes later. Henard sent another attempt wide in the 11th minute, while Moylan forced Stair to make another save in the 13th as the Spiders generated three corner kicks in a span of less than two minutes.
Davidson registered its first shot in the 17th minute before Veronica Rrapi made her first save of the afternoon against Reese Montgomery in the 19th. Richmond continued to generate chances, with Emma Newman and Alden Marin each putting shots on goal before halftime. Rrapi stopped Samantha McGee's attempt in the 43rd minute to preserve the one-goal advantage entering the break.
The Spiders outshot Davidson 8-3 in the opening half, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Richmond continued to apply pressure after halftime, with Zinn forcing a save from Stair less than three minutes into the second period. Christina Stamoulacatos sent an attempt high in the 52nd minute, while the Spiders generated three corner kicks in the opening 12 minutes of the half.
Davidson's Madelyn Hayes forced Isabel Seifert into her only save of the match in the 75th minute. The Wildcats followed with attempts from Charlotte Hansen and Montgomery in the 80th and 81st minutes, respectively, but neither found the target.
Richmond generated two additional shots on goal in the closing minutes, with Stamoulacatos forcing a save in the 79th minute and Newman putting another attempt on frame in the 84th. The Spiders held Davidson without a shot over the final nine minutes to secure their sixth shutout of the season.
Richmond finished with a 12-6 advantage in shots, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal, and generated nine corner kicks to Davidson's two. Moylan, Newman, Henard, Marin and Stamoulacatos each recorded two shots for the Spiders.
Rrapi made two saves in the opening half before Seifert took over after halftime and stopped the only shot she faced. Rrapi earned the win to improve to 4-1-2 this season.
The victory extended Richmond's unbeaten streak against Davidson to four matches (2-0-2) and improved the Spiders to 7-2-4 all-time against the Wildcats. Richmond also remained unbeaten at home, having already secured its first winning home record since 2021.
Richmond will return to action Saturday, Oct. 17, at Saint Louis, with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
