Barbulescu Stays Perfect as Spiders Collect Wins at Elon Invitational

ELON, N.C. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team collected seven singles victories, and two doubles wins over the weekend at the Elon Invitational, led by sophomore Sofia Barbulescu, who extended her unbeaten start to the fall campaign.

Barbulescu improved to 5-0 in singles play with straight-set wins against Virginia Tech's Linda Ziets Segura (6-3, 6-1) and Elon's Simone Bergeron (6-2, 6-3). Her undefeated streak highlights a strong showing for the Spiders, who had six different players record singles victories in the tournament.

Freshman Beatriz Guerra and sophomores Amy Walsh and Abby Lee each earned their first singles wins of the fall. Guerra downed UNC Greensboro's Sofia Somoano 6-0, 6-3, Walsh topped Ella Olexa of UNCG 6-2, 6-3, and Lee battled past UNCG's Sara Kostic 6-3, 7-5. Elizabeth Novak added a 6-3, 6-2 decision against UNCG's Sydney Bly, while Lainey O'Neil defeated Virginia Tech's Elizaveta Castillo 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles, Novak and Lucy Webber were leading against UNCG before their opponents retired due to injury, and Guerra and Walsh paired for a 6-1 victory over Ella Olexa and Eliza Perry of UNCG.

The Spiders will be back in action Oct. 3-5 when they host the River City Open at the Westhampton Tennis Complex.
