Spider Field Hockey Collects Season Opener Over Longwood

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team opened the 2025 season with a 3-0 victory over Longwood University Friday evening at Crenshaw Field.
Richmond (1-0) is back in action Sunday, hosting reigning national champion and #1 Northwestern (0-0) at Crenshaw Field. The UR SAAC Red Game is set for a noon start on ESPN+ and as always free for fans to attend.
After a scoreless opening half, Richmond got on the board in the 38th minute when Jess McMeeking put in the rebound off Valen Luna Paratore's shot and Longwood save high over the Lancer goalkeeper.
Clara Larripa quickly made it 2-0 Spider advantage in the 43rd minute. Alexa Derr fed the ball in from just outside the circle, Luna Paratore got a stick on it and deflected the ball to Larripa who shoveled it into the goal.
Lainey Nichols finished a perfectly executed corner play, one of the Spiders seven in the contest, in the 57th minute. Larripa inserted the ball to Camilia Daud for the stop in front of Nichols who blasted it past the Lancer goalkeeper.
Richmond posted 26 shots and 14 on goal which matched the 2024 squad's output against William & Mary (Sept. 1). Luna Paratore paced the Spiders with 11 shots with five on goal while Larripa tallied seven shots and four on goal.
Defensively, Amanda Cimillo got the shutout making one save as the Richmond squad held Longwood to just four shots and two on goal both in the second quarter. Lillian Buckwalter collected a defensive save in the 17th minute, sliding behind Cimillo, who rushed the forward's shot which then bounced to a Longwood stick, to make the stop.
