RICHMOND, Va. — The University of Richmond finished second among Atlantic 10 institutions in the annual LEARFIELD Directors' Cup standings for the 2024-25 school year, the organization announced this week. The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup awards points based on how each school's teams fare in that year's NCAA Championships. Richmond earned a total of 149.3 points during the 2024-25 school year, 117th most among D-I institutions and trailing only Massachusetts (241 points, 84th place) among the 15 schools in the Atlantic 10.
Richmond was buoyed by women's basketball and men's lacrosse advancing in their respective NCAA Championships, as both programs recorded their first NCAA Tournament wins during the spring semester. 2024-25 marked the third time in the 21st century multiple Spider teams advanced past the 1st Round of the NCAA Championship (2022-23: football, women's lax; 2000-01: football, women's soccer).
Football (won CAA championship and reached FCS Playoffs) and women's golf (won inaugural A-10 championship and placed 11th in Charlottesville NCAA Regional) also contributed to Richmond's 149.3 total points, its second most in the last 19 years behind only its 164 total points in 2022-23.
2024-25 is the second time in the last 15 years Richmond has finished in the top two among A-10 schools in the Directors Cup. The Spiders captured the conference title in 2022-23 and placed 111th among all D-I schools, the only other time UR has finished in the top 120 of the final rankings over the last 19 years.
Teams can earn points from a maximum of 19 sports in the final Directors' Cup standings, five of which must be women's volleyball, soccer, and basketball and men's basketball and baseball. The next highest (14 maximum) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender, are used to calculate the final standings.
