CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Richmond Spiders women's golf team finished 11th in the Charlottesville NCAA Regional Wednesday at Birdwood Golf Course, the best finish by the Spiders in an NCAA Regional in program history. Richmond combined for a team score of 21-over par (305) in Round 3, its best of the event, to jump Big South Conference champion Radford on the team leaderboard and place 11th in the field, which included eight teams ranked in the top 50 in the nation.
"This group has matured a ton," said Spiders coach Calle Barlow. "We seem to deal with adversity a little bit better than when we were here [at Birdwood Golf Course] in the fall."
Junior Hannah Lydic shot a sparkling even-par 71 Wednesday, Richmond's best individual round in the tournament by a margin of two strokes, and moved up 17 spots on the individual leaderboard, finishing in a tie for 30th place at 10-over (223).
"I was seeing a lot of greens, seeing a lot of lines," said Lydic of her final round. "Today I hit a lot of fairways and I was killing the ball and able to play in this wind out here."
Lydic is the first Spider to finish in the top 30 at an NCAA Regional. She played the par-4s at Birdwood in a combined even par throughout the three-round event, tied for eighth best in the field.
Sophomore Maya Beasley placed 51st at 19-over par (232) after draining a long birdie putt on her 54th and final hole in front of a sizable crowd of her teammates and supporters.
Caroline Thompson capped her freshman season with a tie for 53rd at 22-over par (235), three shots in front of junior Olivia Wilkie (58th place) and four shots in front of fellow freshman Katie Magner (59th place).
"Now this entire group has played in a Regional Championship, which is really cool," said Barlow. "This whole group could be back and we could be playing in another championship, and I think they have confidence and they saw what it takes to be successful here at Regionals. I think it was a really good challenge for this group to face and to see."
Richmond's team score of 21-over par Wednesday was three shots better than its Tuesday total and an eight-shot improvement from its 29-over 313 in Round 1 Monday.
"I'm really proud of this team. This is a great squad and we all love each other very much," said Lydic. "It was really cool to play for one another and not just play for ourselves."
In addition their program-record finish Wednesday, the Spiders won the inaugural Atlantic 10 Championship, won the Chris Banister Golf Classic, and had four different golfers win A-10 weekly honors during the 2024-25 season.
"I think this group can do better," said Barlow. "This group is going to continue to break some records."
