JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Molly Wise qualified for the NCAA Championships after placing ninth in the long jump at the NCAA East Regionals Thursday at North Florida. Wise registered a leap of 6.18 meters on her first of three attempts, more than enough to earn her a spot at the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon next month.
"The past couple of days I've just been amazed that I'm even here," said Wise. "But then I came into today refocused and ready to take advantage of this opportunity."
Wise, the two-time defending Atlantic 10 champion, will be the first Spider to compete at the NCAA Championships since Brooke Fazio placed eighth in the 800 meters final in 2021. Her leap of 6.18 meters Thursday placed her ninth in the field of 48 competitors, with the top 12 earning a trip to the NCAA Championships, which will be held from June 11-14.
"This experience has been unreal," Wise added.
The long jump competition was won by Louisville's Synclair Savage with a leap of 6.64 meters.
Wise was joined by teammate Darya Mikusova at the meet. Following a lightning delay of nearly three hours, Mikusova participated in the 400 meter hurdles Thursday evening. She finished seventh in Heat 5 in a time of 58.95 and did not advance to Saturday's quarterfinals, placing 32nd among the 48 competitors.
