Spider Baseball Drops 14-inning Bout at GW

RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond baseball team fell Friday evening 4-3 in 14 innings on a walk off sacrifice fly to George Washington at Tucker Field.
Richmond, now 25-11 on the year and 7-9 in Atlantic 10 action, will return to Tucker Field to face GW, 19-18 on the season and 7-9 in league play, Saturday at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
GW struck first, getting single runs in the second and third off Joey Giordano. Giordano, who came in for UR starter Gerry Peacock was lifted due to injury, tossed one and two-thirds of an inning, scattered three hits, three walks and two strikeouts.
Richmond got on the board in the fifth. After back-to-back base hits from Michael Elko and Connor Larson, Aaron Whitley got hit to load the bases for Jordan Jaffe. Jaffe laced the 1-1 pitch to right center to score Elko and Larson and tie the game at 2-all.
The squads then exchanged seven scoreless frames. Spiders left seven on base while GW had five stranded. Ryan Bilka took to the mound, tossing five and two-thirds of an inning, scattering three hits, one walk and striking out five. Tyler Rigot tossed two and two-thirds of an inning of scoreless action, allowing just three hits.
Brady O'Brien led off the 13th inning with a base hit to right. He moved up on after Trevor Dosenbach got plunked and took third on a wild pitch. D.J. Pacheco drove him O'Brien on a sacrifice fly to give Richmond a 3-2 lead.
GW answered in the bottom of the frame, stringing together two walks, a sacrifice bunt and a base hit to bring in the tying run. Josh Willitts allowed one run on no hits on three walks over two-thirds of an inning of work.
In the bottom of the 14th inning, GW scratched across the winning run on a sacrifice fly off UR reliever Brian Reinke. Reinke allowed one run on two hits and a walk over one and a third of an inning to take the loss.
