ORLANDO, Fla. — After the first day of play, Olivia Wilkie is in second and the Spiders are third at the Atlantic 10 Women's Golf Championship at Evermore Resort. Wilkie, a junior, led UR with a 3-over 75 in Round 1 as the team combined for a score of 29-over par (317), third among the six teams in the field.
"I'm just trying to lead by example this week," said Wilkie, who's playing in her third conference championship. "Be vocal in moments when it counts but not too overbearing. At the end of the day, the girls all know what to do."
Wilkie played her final 10 holes in 2-under par after making three bogeys and a double bogey to open 5-over through eight holes Thursday.
"I made a nice long bogey putt on three after hitting it in the water, which definitely kept my spirits high," said Wilkie. "And then as I found some momentum on the back I was able to keep things going by making a couple par saves."
She's tied with Dayton's Jenna Harter for second at 3-over par among the 28 golfers in the field, three shots behind Loyola Chicago's Cate Reisinger, the Round 1 leader.
With Reisinger leading the way, Loyola Chicago combined for a team score of 16-over par (304) Thursday and is 13 shots in front of the Spiders. Dayton is in second place at 25-over par (313).
Sophomore Maya Beasley is tied for ninth at 7-over par. Beasley was 8-over through seven holes but scraped together 10 pars and one birdie on her final 11 holes to shoot 79.
The rest of the Spiders are tightly packed in the middle of the field, with junior Hannah Lydic in 14th at 9-over par (81), freshman Caroline Thompson tied for 15th at 10-over par (82), and freshman Katie Magner tied for 17th at 12-over par (84).
The Spiders led the field with 55 pars Thursday but carded just four birdies, fourth among among all teams.
"We still have two more days and we can fight back," said Spiders coach Calle Barlow. "Hannah [Lydic] said it will really be a telling sign of who we really are."
Richmond's Round 2 tee times will begin at 8:15 AM Friday. The Spiders will be paired with Dayton and Loyola Chicago.
