RICHMOND, Va. — For the second time this season, junior Lara Bakhaya has been named Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. The honor is Bakhaya's fourth career weekly award after earning two Rookie of the Week selections in 2023. It also marks Richmond's fifth weekly recognition this season, with Sofia Barbulescu earning Rookie of the Week twice and Andrea Campodonico taking home Player of the Week last week.
Bakhaya continued her strong conference play in both doubles and singles, pushing her singles win streak to eight straight matches dating back to March 22, when she posted a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win over Massachusetts' Thamonpan Jonglertakul.
This week, she helped lead the Spiders to two A-10 wins, topping crosstown rival VCU 4-2 on Thursday and sweeping Davidson 4-0 on Sunday. Against VCU in doubles, Bakhaya and Campodonico defeated T. Andrade Sabando and Mariam Ibrahim 6-1 on the top court, despite the Spiders dropping the doubles point. In singles, she sparked Richmond's rally with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Ibrahim on court three, before the Spiders secured wins on courts four, two and six.
Against Davidson, Bakhaya and Campodonico again won on the top doubles court, defeating Kavya Patel and Daniela Porges 6-3 to secure the opening point. In singles, Bakhaya earned her eighth-straight victory with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Porges on court three.
The Spiders will close out the regular season at home, hosting Saint Joseph's on April 18 and George Washington on April 19 at the Westhampton Tennis Complex.
