Spider Baseball Extends Win Streak, Upsets #23 Virginia, 6-2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team upset #23 Virginia, 6-2, to extend program's win streak to 12 games Wednesday night at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park.
Richmond collected the program's first win over Virginia since 2018 and snapped the Cavaliers 31-straight midweek non-conference win-streak that dated back to 2022.
The Spiders, now to 19-2 on the season, stays on the road to face Saint Joseph's in Atlantic 10 action this weekend in Philadelphia. Friday's series opening game is set for a 3 p.m. first pitch on ESPN+.
UR starter Gerry Peacock went four and a third of an inning to pick up his second win of the season. Peacock scattered two hits and allowed one run in the top of the fifth with five strikeouts.
Spiders got the scoring going first in the second inning when Trevor Dosenback hit a two-out, two RBI double down the left field line. UR pushed the lead to 4-0 on Jordan Jaffe's two-out double left center. UR took advantage of four walks and three base hits in the frame.
Michael Elko scored in the third inning on Cole Palmeri's ground out to make it 5-0 Richmond. DJ Pacheco launched a solo home run beyond the left field bleachers in the fifth inning to give the Spiders a 6-0 lead.
Virginia got on the board with single runs in the fifth and sixth, as the Richmond bullpen shut down the Cavaliers bats the final three frames. Brian Reinke tossed an inning of scoreless relief, working around two walks. Chayse Gruber allowed one run on two hits, a walk and a strikeout getting two outs as Tyler Rigot worked around two hits and a walk with two strikeouts over an inning of work. Glenn Smith went one and two-thirds, allowing one hit and a walk with a strike out. Kellen Heney allowed one hit in the ninth as Angel Santiago-Cruz got the final out of the game working out of a bases loaded jam.
