
Richmond Captures Gold on First Day of Atlantic 10 Championships

HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Richmond's swimming and diving team finished day one of the Atlantic 10 Championships at the Hampton Aquaplex on Wednesday. Starting off the first day of competition, the Spiders captured a gold medal finish in the 200-medley relay.Â

Junior Caroline Weldon, freshman Gabbie Primiano, freshman Lena Amare and sophomore Melissa Nwakalor swam in heat one of the relay, and finished with a time of 1:39.64. Weldon swam a split time of 25.52, Primiano swam 28.26, Amare swam 24.51 and Nwakalor swam the fastest split in the pool with a time of 21.35. The relay swam the fourth best time in program history and made a NIC B cut.

In the 800 free relay, Richmond was represented by junior Katie Chignell (1:50.08), Amare (1:50.48), Primiano (1:51.80) and sophomore Erin Budde (1:49.55) who finished fifth with a time of 7:21.91.Â

In the 1-meter dive, junior Sally Harrington advanced to the championship final and junior Tess Weatherhead advanced to the consolation finals. Harrington finished seventh with 226.55 points. Weatherhead finished 14thwith 237.75 points.Â
