RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond baseball team battled back to take game one 2-1 Sunday at Pitt Field. In game two, the Fairfield Stags got out ahead early and stifled the late Spider rally for a 6-3 win.
Richmond moves to 5-1 on the season while Fairfield goes to 3-2. The final game of the series is set for a 1:30 pm first pitch Monday at Pitt Field on ESPN+.
Tied at one with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, DJ Pacheco doubled down the right field line. Joey Wilga muscled a pinch-hit RBI single just beyond the reach of the second baseman to score Pacheco for the walk off victory. This is Wilga's second pinch hit walk off single of the season.
After the Stags took the lead with a first inning home run in game one, Richmond answered with a Michael Elko sacrifice bunt to score Aidan O'Keefe.
Esteban Rodriguez threw three frames, allowing just the one run on three hits, three walks and four strikeouts. Ryan Bilka (1-0) followed with four scoreless frames allowing only one Fairfield batter to reach via a walk with two strikeouts.
In game two, Fairfield jumped on Richmond starter Chase Topolski early, tagging him for two runs on four hits. Topolski got a strikeout to end a bases loaded situation.
Jack Arcamone doubled in Phil Bernstein to get a run back in the bottom of the first. The Stags pitchers kept every other Spider offensive push quiet as their offense collected 16 hits in the game.
Down 6-1 in the eighth, Arcamone launched a two-run home run to right center for his first blast of the season to cut into the Stags lead.
The Spiders used six pitchers in game two. Topolski (0-1) went three and two-thirds allowing two runs on five hits, with two walks and five strikeouts. Glenn Smith tossed an inning allowing one run on two hits and two walks while Brian Reinke had the same line. Jackson Kraemer made his season debut, allowing two runs on two hits, a walk and a strikeout. Dane Armson allowed three hits and struck out three in his inning and a third of work. Kellan Heney tossed the ninth inning for his season debut allowing just two hits in a scoreless frame.
