University of Richmond Spiders Aim for Record-Breaking Women’s Basketball Crowd With ‘Operation: Code Red’
12/19/2025 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond Athletics has launched Operation: Code Red, an initiative aimed at drawing a historic "Red Out" crowd for the women's basketball game against VCU on Jan. 18 at the Robins Center. The noon (ET) game will air nationally on CBS Sports Network. Spider fans can purchase their tickets now to support Spider women's basketball at its biggest home game of the season.
"One of my top goals since arriving at Richmond has been to sell out the Robins Center," head coach Aaron Roussell said. "Our players have earned this moment, and what better time to make a run at that than with a national TV game against our conference and city rival."
Supported by multiple campus partners, Operation: Code Red aims to bring 5,000 fans to the Robins Center on January 18, which would be the biggest home crowd for women's basketball since 5,579 fans saw Richmond face Wake Forest on Nov. 30, 2000 — more than 25 years ago. Spider women's basketball is in the midst of a period of unprecedented success, and giving the team a chance to play in front of a monumental crowd is a priority for Richmond Athletics. Athletics is asking all Spider fans to wear red in support of our team.
Over the last two-plus seasons, Richmond has won two Atlantic 10 regular season championships and an Atlantic 10 Tournament championship, the first A-10 titles in program history. The Spiders are also coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and earned the first NCAA Tournament win in program history in March, a 74-49 victory over Georgia Tech. This season's team was picked first in the Atlantic 10 women's basketball preseason poll and is currently 9-3 with two games remaining in non-conference play.
"This team is on a historic run with some of the best players in our program's history," Roussell said. "Our players and our style of play have generated a high level of enthusiasm that continues to grow our amazing fan base."
Jan. 18 will mark the latest chapter in one of Richmond's fiercest rivalries. Richmond and VCU, whose campuses are separated by just six miles and have met 94 times in women's basketball, with the all-time series tied 47-47. The Spiders have won the last five meetings and could take a 48-47 lead with a victory.
Operation: Code Red is also dedicated to recognizing all Spider women student-athletes as part of Richmond's celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, presented by CarMax. In-game programming on Jan. 18 will honor Spider student-athletes from every women's sport and celebrate the accomplishments of female athletes of every age.
