09/01/2024 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – Despite four dangerous looks on target from the Spider offense, the University of Richmond women's soccer team dropped a close battle, 1-0, against Delaware Sunday afternoon at home. Richmond suffers its first loss of the season and fell to 2-1-1 while the Blue Hens improved to 1-4-1.
Goals
'66 – Delaware: Amy Swain, asst. Brooke Vogel
How it Happened
The Spiders were able to dominate possession in the first half as Kiley Fitzgerald got the first shot off for the Spiders in the ninth minute but was collected by the Blue Hens keeper. Eight minutes later, Anna Garcia had a look on frame, but was again saved. The teams shared bouts of possession until the 38th minute where Marisa Snee had a look on target, but the UD keeper kept the clean sheet going into the second half.
Delaware was able to pick up a penalty kick in the 61st minute, but the crossbar kept the Spiders level. The Blue Hens finally broke through in the 66th minute after a scramble inside the box. Gwen Howell, Grace Murphy and Kelly Hutton would all have looks following the goal, but Richmond was unable to capitalize on the chances as UD took the win 1-0.
Notes on the Game
From Head Coach Adam Denton
"I think the whole game was pretty even but ultimately it came down to the fact we just didn't have enough quality in that final third," Denton said. "We didn't test the keeper enough. We put some good serves into the box but we weren't in the right spots on the end of them. Trying to get the first goal in this game was going to be a challenge on both ends because neither team was creating chances on goal which forced a lot of play in the middle of the pitch."
Up Next
The Spiders are back in action on Thursday, as the team takes on William & Mary on the road at 7 p.m. before welcoming American to President's Field on Sept. 8 at 2 p.m.
