Grayum's Record 7 Goals Pace Spiders on Senior Day

RICHMOND, Va. — Luke Grayum equaled a program record with seven goals and the Spiders blitzed Hobart with four scores in the game's first four-and-a-half minutes in a 21-8 Richmond win on Senior Day Saturday at Robins Stadium. The win moved the Spiders to 2-0 in A-10 play and 7-4 overall this season.
"It felt like we had a bit of a breakthrough Thursday in a couple of areas and I think that showed today," said Spiders coach Dan Chemotti. "The first half of the season gave us a chance to really figure out who we are and what we're going to be good at against other teams, what other teams are going to try and take away, and how we're going to have to adjust to those things. We remain focused on just getting better, and I think we've done it the last two weeks."
It would be difficult to have a better start than the Spiders did Saturday, as Richmond scored three times in a 45-second span early in the first quarter. Lance Madonna opened the scoring 62 seconds into the game (13:58), Dalton Young made it 2-0 31 seconds later (13:27), and Grayum's first goal came 14 seconds after that (13:13).
Grayum scored once more in the first quarter and then five times in the second quarter to match the program record for goals in a game by halftime. He equaled his own seven goals from earlier this season vs Binghamton and the seven goals scored by Richie Connell at Bellarmine in 2021.
"He's doing what he does best," said Chemotti of Grayum. "We challenged him a couple of weeks ago significantly and he's a competitor and he's really responded. I'm really proud of him."
With the Spiders holding a large lead, Grayum played sparingly in the second half, finishing the day with seven goals on nine shots.
"It was Senior Day today, so I really wanted a couple of guys who work extremely hard on the offensive end who don't always get to play to get in the game," said Grayum.
Dalton Young recorded a team-high four assists as well as a pair of goals, giving him a team-high 58 points this season. Aidan O'Neil and Lance Madonna also scored twice, and eight other Spiders scored one goal each in UR's 21-8 win, its second largest of the season.
Goalie Zach Vigue made nine saves to get the win, and Braden McClure caused a game-high three turnovers, one fewer than the entire Hobart team.
The Spiders have outscored their opponents 40-16 in two conference games this season. Up next for UR is a road game vs Saturday at High Point.
"I think we're still growing as a team," said Grayum. "The last couple of weeks we've really focused on getting back to some things as a team and buttoning up our culture and I think we're on the way. Last week was a step in the right direction. Today was another step in the right direction. Next week is going to be a big-time test on the road."
