Richmond, Va. – What started as a tight back and forth affair between No. 17 Richmond and No. 10 Georgetown ended in a 14-8 home loss for the Spiders as the Hoyas went on scoring runs of six and four goals Saturday night at Robins Stadium.
Richmond and Georgetown went goal-for-goal for the game's first quarter. The Hoyas scored first with a goal at 10:15 and from there each team responded to their opponent's goal with another of their own before the end of the first brought up a 3-3 score.
Charlie Packard put the Spiders on the board when he fired a shot from the right side of the cage for Richmond's first tally of the day. Then Henry Alpaugh followed with another shot from distance (this one off a pass from Lance Madonna) on man-up before Aidan O'Neil found Dalton Young in front of the cage for a quick turn and score.
Georgetown then went on a six-goal run between 9:15 in the second and 14:16 of the third before Young broke the Spiders scoring drought with his second of the game at 13:09 in the third. Richmond went 1-6 on face offs during the Hoyas first run and ended the day 12-26 at the dot.
From there, the Spiders went on a short run and added two more quick goals with a goal by Lucas Littlejohn (assist Grayum) and Jack Pilling (assist O'Neil) scored the first goal of his career to make it 10-7 at the 11:32 mark of the third.
The Hoyas then went on another run – this one of four goals between 11:26 and 1:36 – to make it a 14-7 game going into the final frame.
Young recorded his fifth hat trick of the season and broke up another Georgetown scoring run with his goal in front of the crease at 7:35 in the fourth, but it wouldn't be enough as the Hoyas would pull out with the 14-8 victory.
Georgetown outgained Richmond 33-25 on ground balls and recorded 14 saves while Zach Vigue made 10 in cage for the Spiders.
The Spiders hit the road next Saturday, March 30, when the team makes its longest road trip of the season to open conference play at St. Bonaventure. Opening face off is set for 1:00.
