Richmond, Va. – The No. 17 University of Richmond men's lacrosse team held the nation's top offense, No. 4 Duke, to a narrow 4-2 advantage through the first half of Saturday's game before the Blue Devils went on a 8-1 run over the final 30 minutes to run away from the Spiders, 12-3.
The game sat at a 0-0 deadlock until Duke went up 1-0 with a goal at 2:49 in the first quarter. Lance Madonna tied the game with his goal just under three minutes into the second before Duke answered back less than 30 seconds later with a goal at 11:16.
"I give Duke a lot of credit," said head coach Dan Chemotti. "They were really, really strong today and their defense was suffocating."
Then, Luke Grayum scored off a feed from Dalton Young at 7:47 of the same frame in what would be the Spiders last goal for the next 27:38 as Duke scored eight unanswered including six in the third quarter.
Young's goal at the 9:09 mark of the fourth quarter came off a pass from Jake Kapp and marked his 227th career point, moving the fifth-year senior to second all-time for the Spiders.
Zach Vigue recorded nine saves and Jared Chenoy took all 19 face off attempts for Richmond, winning 11. The Spiders were 16-17 on clears while Duke went 22-25. Both teams killed three man-up opportunities apiece and Duke held a 23-20 upper hand on ground balls. Duke freshman Patrick Jamieson recorded 12 saves.
The Spiders defense forced Duke to match a season low in goals and caused five turnovers led by Hunter Smith with two, while Charlie Packard, Jack Pilling and Joe Gooley each added another.
