Spiders Finish Fourth at Patriot Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va. -  The University of Richmond women's swimming and diving team competed on the final day of the Patriot Invitational at the Aquatic and Fitness Center today. The Spiders tallied 1,116.50 points after the three days of competition.

Leading the Spiders was sophomore Melissa Nwakalor and freshman Gabbie Primiano. Nwakalor tied for first in the 100 free and finished at 50.16. She finished with a new season best and made the NIC B cut for the CSCAA.
Primiano had a record breaking day as she set a new freshman record in the 200 breast. Primiano finished first at 2:14.19, and now sits fifth in the top 10 all-time in the Spider record book. Setting a new personal best, she also made the NIC B cut for the CSCAA.Â

In the distance portion, junior Natalie Stuart finished at 17:42.35 placing fourteenth in the 1650 free. Freshman Carys Edgar placed eighteenth at 17:49.52. Sophomores Erin Budde and Kaitlyn Bauer also made the finals. Budde finished at 17:51.75 placing twenty-first and Bauer placing twenty-fourth at 18:11.94.Â

Freshman Lena Amare finished with a personal best in the 200 back finishing ninth at 2:00.00. Junior Caroline Weldon placed twelfth at 2:03.64 finishing with a season-best. Senior Leigh Spicer finished at 2:09.27 placing twenty-second with a season-best.Â

In the 100 free, Budde finished sixteenth at 52.19 with a new personal best

Sophomore Presley Baber finished nineteenth in the 200 breast with a season-best at 2:23.30. Senior Laura Davis finished at 2:24.77 with a season-best.Â

In the 200 fly, Bauer finished seventh with a season-best at 2:06.43. Junior Katie Chignell finished ninth setting a new personal best at 2:04.60. Freshman Madisyn Carter finished at 2:10.40, placing twentieth.Â

In the 400 free relay, the Spiders (B) relay finished fifth at 3:25.46. Swimming in this relay were Amare (51.28), Hughes (50.82), junior Julia Krichev (51.76) and Budde (51.60). In the Spiders (A) relay, Nwakalor (50.62), Chignell (51.24), Bauer (53.71) and Baber (52.15), finished at 3:27.72 placing eighth.Â

In the diving portion, juniors Sally Harrington and Tess Weatherhead led Richmond. In the one meter, Harrington placed seventh after tallying 227 points. In the three-meter, Weatherhead placed second tallying 273.25 points, just eight points behind the first-place finisher.Â

Richmond is idle to compete as it prepares for the Speedo Winter Junior Championships on December 11 in Greensboro, N.C.
