HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first half, the Hawks broke the deadlock after a free kick was sent into the box. The Hawks got a foot on the ball and sent it into the right corner past keeper Taylor Montague for the opening goal. In the 59th minute, Molly Wierman had a dangerous shot on goal, which bounced off the SJU keeper and found the foot of Emma Shields, who slotted it into the back of the net for the equalizer. Three minutes later, in the 62nd minute, Casey Merz scored the go-ahead goal for the Spiders off of a header from a corner kick sent in by Wierman.
The Hawks would respond and tie the game at two in the 77th minute, and capitalize on the game winning goal in the 82nd minute following long periods of possession in the Spider defensive half.
NOTES ON THE GAME
FROM HEAD COACH Adam Denton
"We created some good opportunities, but we gave away sloppy goals. The most disappointing thing was that we were up late at home and saw two late goals in what a really important game was. It was a little bit of déjà vu as we had the same thing happen last week against Charlotte in our last non-conference game. We have to learn quickly since it's a short season and it's a tough league."
UP NEXT
The Spiders continue conference play on Thursday as the team plays host to George Mason at 4:30 p.m. at President's Field. Following the match with the Patriots the team will travel to Philadelphia for a match against La Salle on Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.
