Spiders Drop Close Battle at VCU to Open Conference Play

RICHMOND, Va. – Despite a stellar performance from senior goalkeeper Taylor Montague, the University of Richmond Women's Soccer team opened Atlantic 10 action with a hard-fought loss at VCU, 1-0, Thursday night. With the loss, the Spiders fell to 2-4-3 overall and 0-1 in the A-10, while the Rams improved to 2-4-2 and 1-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Spiders ended the first half in a deadlock with the Rams, VCU continued to apply pressure to the Spider back line and sent multiple dangerous crosses into the box. In the 77^th minute, the Rams broke through and found the back of the net for the 1-0 win as the Spiders couldn't find the equalizer as time expired.

NOTES ON THE GAME

Taylor Montague recorded a season-high 10 saves through 21 shots, while only conceding a goal.
Montague, along with Caitlin Sutton, Elle Dziadzio, Hannah Antonick, Gwen Howell, JoJo McShane and Casey Merz all played the full 90 minutes.
Emma Shields and Sutton recorded the only two shots for the Spiders.
Merz picked up a yellow card in the 79^th minute.
The all-time record against VCU moved to 10-15-3.
