Spiders Outlast UMass for First Conference Victory
04/08/2023 | Men's Lacrosse
Richmond, Va. – The University of Richmond Men's Lacrosse team held off a late Massachusetts scoring run to earn its first-ever Atlantic 10 Conference victory Saturday, taking down the Minutemen 13-12 at Robins Stadium.
Richmond (6-4, 1-1) went on a three-goal scoring run late in the game to make it 13-9 with 9:27 left in the fourth before UMass (6-4, 1-1) answered back with three goals of its own, pulling the game within one with just 2:02 left.
Richmond won the final face off and looked to kill the clock in its scoring end before a Spider turnover sent the ball the other way. Then, Jake Saunders, who had exited the game after a hard fall following the final UMass goal, returned to cause a turnover at midfield to give Richmond the ball back as time expired.
Luke Grayum and Joe Sheridan led the offense with three goals each while Dalton Young (5 assists) and Aidan O'Neil added two and Lance Madonna (2 assists), Henry Alpaugh and Max Merklinger added one each.
With his seven points, Dalton Young has now recorded three-straight games with two goals and five assists. His five assists are a career-high.
Richmond's offense helped break down the UMass goalie – who entered the game with a nation-leading 0.615 save percentage and just 8.77 goals allowed per game – with 47 shots including 20 on cage. UMass totaled 31 shots with 17 on target.
Zach Vigue recorded five saves for the Spiders, while Jake Saunders caused a career-high five turnovers for the third time this season. Jeff Nugent was also an asset out of the defensive midfield, tying a career-high two caused turnovers and picking up a career-high three ground balls.
Jared Chenoy went 12-27 in the faceoff circle and scooped five ground balls in the win.
Richmond returns home next week, Saturday, April 15, to play rival High Point under the lights at Robins Stadium. Game time is set for 5:00.
