Spiders Open Conference Play with Loss at Saint Joseph's

Philadelphia— The University of Richmond Men's Lacrosse team opened Atlantic 10 play Saturday, falling to Saint Joseph's 14-12. The game marked the first-ever conference matchup for both teams in the newly-formed league.
Richmond goals were scored by Lance Madonna with three, Dalton Young with two (5 assists), Henry Alpaugh and Aidan O'Neil with two and an assist each and Derrek Madonna, Jeff Nugent and Lukas Olsson with one apiece.
The back-and-forth game saw seven ties throughout including a 5-5 deadlock at halftime. Richmond (5-4, 0-1) came out of the break swinging, eventually taking a 5-8 lead—its largest of the day—at the 9:12 mark in the third.
From there, Saint Joseph's (5-4, 1-0) began creeping back, with the game tying three more times at 9-9 (0:56 in the 3rd), 10-10 (12:57 in the 4th) and 11-11 (4:17 in the fourth).
While Richmond held the upper hand in the third quarter, the fourth ultimately belonged to the Hawks as they outscored the Spiders late and tallied three goals in the final 3:29 of the game to close the door on Richmond.
Tommy Stull led the defensive effort, scooping a career-high five ground balls and tying a career-best two caused turnovers. Freshmen Jack Pilling and Hunter Smith also recorded two caused turnovers each. In cage, Zach Vigue made 10 saves and allowed 13 goals, while Bo Brown played the final :48 seconds in Richmond's last-chance effort to score.
While scoring was nearly even until late, the Spiders trailed the Hawks throughout in shots (41-45), ground balls (32-27) and face offs (18-13).
After three games on the road, the Richmond returns to Robins Stadium for the first time in over a month on Saturday, April 8 to face UMass. Game time is set for 11:30.
