03/25/2023 | Men's Lacrosse
New York— The University of Richmond Men's Lacrosse team went a 9-2 run in the second half to earn its first road win of the season and take down St. John's, 11-8.
Richmond was led by Dalton Young (2 goals, 5 assists), Derrek Madonna (2 goals, 1 assist), Lance Madonna (3 goals), Aidan O'Neil (2 goals), Luke Grayum (1 goal, 1 assist), Henry Alpaugh (1 goal) and Max Merklinger (1 assist).
On the defensive end of the field, Jake Saunders was dominant with five caused turnovers, which ties both a season and career-high. The graduate student also picked up four ground balls. In cage, Zach Vigue tallied 11 saves in the win to move Richmond to 5-3 on the year. St. John's falls to 0-9 with the loss.
Jared Chenoy assured the Spiders would have plenty of opportunities on offense, winning 15-of-21 face offs and scooping 11 ground balls.
The Spiders came out to a slow start in the first half before heading into the break down 6-2. The game was tied at two apiece at the 14:10 mark of the second quarter, but the Red Storm went on a 4-0 scoring streak until Dalton Young's goal at the 13:57 mark of the third sparked Richmond.
From there, Richmond would go on an 8-2 run including three and four-unanswered goal streaks. On top of the revived offense, the Spiders killed four of five Red Storm man-up opportunities during the day, holding them scoreless on five man-up opportunities including a two-man down situation with the game tied 8-8 late in the third.
Richmond held the upper hand in nearly every category with a 39-36 advantage in shots, 36-27 advantage in ground balls and was 25-28 on clears while St. John's went 22-29.
History will be made next week when the Spiders travel to Saint Joseph's for their first-ever game in the newly-created Atlantic 10 men's lacrosse conference. Game time is set for 1:00 on Saturday, April 1.
