Spiders Fall to Princeton on the Road Sunday Afternoon
01/15/2023 | Women's Tennis
PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team fell in a tough-fought battle to Princeton Sunday afternoon to open the 2023 slate. The Spiders fell 7-0 against the Tigers while senior Andrea Campodonico won a key opening set against Zoe Howard (PRIN), but ultimately fell 2-1.
"It was a good start to our regular season full of a lot of firsts for our team," said head coach Jacob Dunbar. "We knew it was going to be a tough match and we turned it into a battle in a number of positions."
The match began with doubles play as Campodonico and senior Marta Buendia fell 6-3 against the Tigers. Juniors Carly Cohen and Leonor Oliveira finished second in doubles as the duo narrowly fell, 6-4, and freshman Elizabeth Novak and freshman Lara Bakhaya tied their doubles match at five before the Tigers got the final two games off and took the match 7-5.
"Across the board we came out of the gate primed and ready to go in doubles, so we were very pleased with that," Dunbar said. "We got a few key points here or there in those matches and all of them easily could've come our way."
For singles, Campodonico took the opening set against Howard, 6-1, on court three, but Howard battled back to take the second and third sets, 6-3, and the match 2-1. Cohen, who took on Neha Velaga (PRIN) fell in the opening set 6-3 but rallied back and narrowly fell in the second set 7-6 (4).
"In singles, Andy and Carly really showed what they were capable of," Dunbar said. "They had good chances and just came up a bit short. Even though the scores didn't reflect it, the rest of the team really made Princeton earn it as well.
The Spiders continue the season on the road with another Ivy League match at UPenn in Philadelphia, Pa. on Monday at noon.
"This match was a good jumping off point," Dunbar said. "It showed us where our weak points were and the things we need to clean up going into the next few weeks if we want to beat teams of that caliber."
