Spiders Suffer Setback at Campbell
09/01/2022 | Women's Soccer
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The University of Richmond soccer team suffered a setback Thursday night at Campbell, falling 3-0 to the Fighting Camels, who were picked as the Big South Conference preseason favorite. Richmond falls to 1-2-1 on the year with the loss.
"Tonight can be a great learning experience if we respond in a positive way Sunday against a very good Liberty team. For 90 minutes tonight, we were undisciplined defensively and we got out worked all over the field. Full credit to Jeff [Gross], his staff, and his players. I'm excited to see how our team grows from tonight's game," said head coach Marty Beall.
Olivia Neal put the Camels on the board just 34 seconds into the match as she collected Bayleigh Humbert's shot off Spider goalkeeper Taylor Montague and scored.
Campbell doubled its lead in the 40th minute as Jackie Richards crossed a ball into the box from the left corner of the field to Kayleigh Backlund who used her right foot to score.
Backlund found the back of the net again just four minutes later on a blast just outside the box thanks to a double-assist from Taryn Phillips and Elyssa Nowowieski.
Richmond's best chance of the evening came in the 28th minute as Emma Coleman's shot on goal was saved by Stephanie Martelli.
The Camels held a 18-8 edge on shots, including an 8-3 advantage for shots on goal over the Spiders. Coleman had three of Richmond's shots, and Montague made five saves in goal.
The Spiders return to President's Field Sunday, Sept. 4 to host Liberty at 3 p.m. It will be senior day as Richmond's eight seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony beginning at 2:40 p.m.
