Spiders Fall to Liberty on Senior Day
09/04/2022 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond hosted Liberty Sunday afternoon for senior day at President's Field, and the Spiders dropped a hard-fought contest 1-0 to the Flames. The Spiders fall to 1-3-1 on the year while the Flames improve to 4-1-1.
Richmond had solid chances in the first half, including a hard strike on target from Molly Wierman in the 11th minute and a header on goal from Jessie Prillaman in the 27th minute.
After going into halftime tied up at 0-0, the Spiders continued to hold off the Flames until the 79th minute when, off a Liberty throw in, the ball deflected off a Richmond defender and Bridie Herman was able to get a good foot on the ball to beat the Spiders at the top right of the goal.
"I thought we had an excellent first half. We defended well, kept possession well, and created some excellent scoring opportunities, but unfortunately, we didn't capitalize," said head coach Marty Beall. "The second half Liberty had the better play, but it's really disappointing to lose on a goal like that. This team has shown they are resilient, so I'm confident we will grow."
Spider goalkeeper Taylor Montague posted a season-high six saves, three in each half.
Before kickoff, the Spiders honored their eight seniors in a ceremony with their families on the field. Those honored included Catie Groves, Emma Kennedy, Gianna Lucchesi, Sara Moushegian, Jessie Prillaman, Nora Santelli, Caitlin Sutton, and Molly Wierman.
Up next, the Spiders remain at home to host Old Dominion Thursday, Sept. 8 at 5 p.m.
