Women’s Tennis Opens Season With Successful Weekend Against UNCW

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis program opened the 2021-22 season with a weekend of tennis against the UNCW at the Westhampton Tennis Courts on campus. The Spiders won five out of the six singles matches Sunday and the top doubles team of Sara Salemyr and Andrea Campodonico won all three of their matches Saturday, dropping six games only.
The two teams played three doubles rounds Saturday with the team of Salemyr/Campodonico winning matches by 6-1, 6-3 and 6-2 scores each. Additionally, the Spiders used four different doubles combinations in the remaining matches on the weekend. Marta Buendia and Helene Heiberg combined in round one for a 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles over Lauren Robbins/Sarah Merrill. Emily Dunbar and Buendia were the only other doubles combination to play together more than once, dropping two matches by 7-5 and 6-2 scores.
Sunday, the Spiders won five out of the six singles matches. Emily Dunbar took home a 7-5, 6-0 defeat at No. 1 singles over Brinley Bell. Campodonico defeated Sarah Merrill 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles while Salemyr dropped a match at No. 3 singles by a 7-5, 4-6, 5-10 score as the only singles match to go to tiebreak.
The Spiders took home the final three singles matches on the day with Carly Cohen posting a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Lauren Gish at No. 4. Marta Buendia and Helene Heiberg both won sets against Anna Daniels as the Seahawks were forced to split the final match due to injuries on the trip.
Women's tennis returns to action Oct. 1-4 at the Southern Regionals held at both Virginia Tech and William & Mary.
