Soccer Opens Home Season with Win Over Longwood
08/29/2021 | Women's Soccer
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team opened the 2021 home schedule with a 1-0 victory over the visiting Longwood Lancers Sunday afternoon. Jessie Prillaman (Magnolia, Del.) found the net midway through the second half that proved to be the difference in the matchup. Richmond is now 1-2 on the season, while Longwood falls to 0-3.
"Great team performance today against a very good Longwood squad." Head coach Marty Beall said, "Longwood likes to possess the ball and I thought we did a really good job of handling their attacks and how they wanted to build and their press. We got the shutout win which is great. Claire Hinkle came up with three ridiculous saves. For us, she was the player of the game. Just a great team win. We moved the ball well, created some great chances and Jessie Prillaman scored an absolute cracker of a goal. Feels great to get out here and get a win. We're especially thankful for all the fans and student-athletes that were out here. Your energy and everything fed into the team and we're very grateful for that."
The Spider offense was paced by Prillaman who led the team with three shots, two on frame and her second goal of the season. TJ Anderson (Peachtree Corners, Ga.) also notched three shots, one on frame. Junior defender Emma Kennedy (Blacksburg, Va.) added a pair of shots in the contest, and Emma Coleman (Vienna, Va.) recorded two shots off the bench.
Claire Hinkle (Tipp City, Ohio) got the start in net, playing the full 90. She notched three saves, none bigger than turning away a one-on-one opportunity for Longwood in the 56th minute.
The Spiders broke the scoreless game in the 58th minute. Prillaman received the Molly Morgan (Upper Arlington, Ohio) throw in, turned the corner and fired a shot to the nearside post that was over the Longwood goalkeeper's outstretched hands for the goal.
As a team, the spiders outshot the Lancers 16-7 throughout the match. Richmond recorded nine shots in the first half, and seven in the second.
Richmond is back in action this Thursday as they lead to Lynchburg for a matchup with the Liberty Flames at 6 p.m.
