Women’s Tennis Falls in A-10 Championship Final against VCU

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team dropped the doubles point and lost three singles matches to fall short in the Atlantic 10 Championship final against No. 1 seed VCU, 4-0, Saturday at the USTA National Campus.
The Spiders (9-5, 4-1 A-10) lost the first two doubles matches. At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Marta Buendia (Madrid, Spain) and senior Adrienne Haynes (Asheville, N.C.) were tied 5-5 before the doubles point was clinched against Alessia Ciuca and Shivani Manijanna.
Sophomore Andrea Campodonico (Asuncion, Paraguay) and freshman Sara Salemyr (Stockholm, Sweden) fell to Noumea Witmus and Paola Diaz-Delgado, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 1 doubles, graduate student Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) and senior Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) battled but came up short 6-4 against Gabriela Davidescu and Luminita Tutunaru.
In singles, VCU took control with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles. The Rams took a 3-0 lead after Diaz-Delgado won in straight sets against Dunbar, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
Freshman Polina Shitikova (Rybinsk, Russia) fell short at No. 4 singles against Gabriela Davidescu, 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the win for VCU.
The final three matches all went unfinished with Richmond battling on all three courts. Zlateva was in a first-set tiebreaker, 6-6 against Tutunaru at No. 2 singles. Campodonico was leading 6-3, 3-2 against Ciuca at No. 3 singles. Salemyr won the first set, 6-3, but was down 2-5 in the second set.
The Spiders finished the 2021 season with a 9-5 overall record, making the A-10 finals in two-straight years (2019).
