Men’s Lacrosse Locks Up Top Seed In SoCon Tournament With Win At Mercer

RICHMOND, Va. – The 14th-ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse team locked up the number one seed in the 2021 Southern Conference Tournament and claimed at least a share of the regular season title Sunday afternoon in Macon, Ga., as the Spiders posted a convincing 21-8 victory at Mercer.
The Spiders are the only undefeated team in league play this season with a 5-0 conference record and a 6-4 mark overall. The Spiders have out-scored opponents 92-36 in league play this season and improves the Spiders to 35-5 all-time in SoCon play. Richmond closes out the regular season next Saturday hosting Air Force with a chance to win the regular season outright. The 2021 SoCon Tournament will be held at Robins Stadium May 5 and 7.
Senior attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) led the way, tying his career-high with 12 points in the victory. The 12 points ties the SoCon single-game record with his own record set earlier this season at Bellarmine. Lanchbury scored five goals and dished out seven assists Sunday, having a hand in seven out of the first eight goals for the Spiders.
Sophomore Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) was one of four Spiders with at least three goals in the win. Connell posted five goals, tying for the team lead, while sophomore Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) added four goals. Ryan Dunn (Towson, Md.) chipped in three goals for his second career hat trick while freshman Jeff Nugent (Monroe, Conn.) scored the first goal of his career.
The Spiders tied a single-game team record with six man-up goals Sunday, finishing the day 6-of-7 with the advantage. Young and Lanchbury led with two man-up goals each while Connell and Dunn each added the others.
Mercer (5-7, 2-3 SoCon) scored the game's first goal before the Spiders answered back with six-straight and out-scored the Bears 7-2 in the opening 15 minutes. Lanchbury tallied a hat trick just 10:01 into the game while scoring six points in the opening quarter.
Richmond broke the game open early in the third quarter, scoring five-straight in the first 5:20 of the quarter opening up to a 13-3 lead. Dunn tallied his hat trick early in the quarter while Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) tallied another goal for the Spiders. Richmond had a run of six-straight goals and scoring eight out of nine goals in the fourth quarter. Connell scored three of those goals in that run while Andrew Cook (Mechanicsville, Va.) added his first tally of the year.
The Spiders out-shot Mercer by a 55-26 margin in the win and won 36 ground balls. Richmond won 22-of-31 face-offs with Jacob Griffin (Skokie, Ill.) winning 16-of-21 and Andrew Hamilton (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) winning 6-of-10. Griffin led the way with 11 ground balls while defender Jason Reynolds (Chester Springs, Pa.) led the defense with four caused turnovers.
