Strong Third Quarter Propels #13 Men’s Lacrosse Over Jacksonville

RICHMOND, Va. – The 13th ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse improved to 4-0 in Southern Conference play and 34-5 all-time in regular season SoCon games in program history as the Spiders posted a 14-7 victory over Jacksonville Saturday at Robins Stadium. The Spiders out-scored the Dolphins 7-1 in the third quarter and now stand alone atop the SoCon standings as the league's only unbeaten team in conference play.
Sophomore attack Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) led seven Spider scorers with a game-high four goals, raising his season total to 28 goals through nine games. Sophomore attack Richie Connell (Evergreen, Colo.) tallied three goals in the win while midfielders Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) and Tyler Shoults (Warners, N.Y.) each added a pair of goals.
The Spiders (5-4, 4-0 SoCon) opened the scoring with the only two goals in the first quarter. Savoca and Connell tallied the first two goals of the game before Jacksonville got its first goal of the game early in the second quarter. Young tallied a pair of goals in the second quarter before Shoults and Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) tallied markers giving the Spiders a 6-3 lead at halftime.
Richmond broke the game open in the third quarter, out-scoring the Dolphins 7-1 in the 15-minute period. Shoults, Young and Connell scored three goals in a span of 2:55 to start the run before Jacksonville slowed the flow momentarily. The Spiders scored four-straight to end the quarter and five in a row total.
Long-stick midfielder Jake Kapp (Pepper Pike, Ohio) scored his first career collegiate goal starting the run before Young tallied his fourth of the game. Jack Delligatti (Summerfield, N.C.) and Connell closed out the quarter before Savoca scored one early in the fourth for a 14-4 lead.
Graduate goalie Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) held the Dolphins to six goals in 57:38 of action while posting 11 saves. Graduate long-stick midfielder Sean Menges (Richmond, Va.) led the team with five ground balls. The Spiders controlled the face-off, winning 17-of-24 on the day. Jacob Griffin (Skokie, Ill.) won 10-of-14 while Andrew Hamilton (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) won 6-of-8.
Jacksonville (6-5, 3-1 SoCon) had three different players score a pair of goals in the loss with Matt Stagnitta and Evan Tyler leading the way with three points apiece. Goalie Jason Yoquinto made seven saves in the loss and allowed 14 goals in 60 minutes.
Richmond closes out the regular season May 1 when it hosts Air Force in the final contest before the SoCon Tournament, which is also hosted at Robins Stadium in May.
