Richmond Earns 6-1 Home Win Against Duquesne

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team won the doubles point and won five of six singles matches to defeat Duquesne, 6-1, Sunday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
The Spiders (2-2, 1-0 A-10) won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. At No. 1 doubles, graduate student Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) and senior Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) earned a 6-3 win against Margot Pessy and Meredith Lee.
junior Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway and senior Adrienne Haynes (Asheville, N.C.) clinched the doubles win against Amulika Gottiparthy and Ana Utrilla Benito, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.
In the final doubles match, sophomore Andrea Campodonico (Asuncion, Paraguay) and freshman Sara Salemyr (Stockholm, Sweden) won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles against Daniela Latoni and Ellen Shanahan.
In singles, Zlateva won in straight sets against Pessy, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. The Dukes cut the lead to 2-1 after Latoni won against Heiberg, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
Dunbar pushed the lead to 3-1 after winning at No. 1 singles against Natasha Novak, 6-2. 6-4. Campodonico clinched the win with a tough 7-6 (7-0), 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. Salemyr also won in a first set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3) and won the second set, 6-1 against Meredith Lee at No. 4 singles.
In the last singles match, freshman Carly Cohen (Pepper Pike, Ohio) won the first set 6-2 but lost the second set 5-7 before winning the third set super tiebreaker, 10-3.
Richmond will host A-10 rival VCU on Thursday, March 25 at 2:30 at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
