Spiders Take Down A-10 Foe Duquesne, 6-1

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team won the doubles point and took five of six singles matches to defeat A-10 foe Duquesne, 6-1, Sunday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
The Spiders (3-6, 1-1 A-10) started the match by winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead.
Junior John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and junior Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) started with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles against Alex Mascioli and Joey Matthews.
At No. 1 doubles, freshman Daniel Kliebhan (Newtown, Pa.) and junior Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) clinched the win against Alejandro Rodriguez and Tamirlan Teberikov, 7-5.
In the final doubles match, junior Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and graduate student Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) earned the sweep with a 6-4 win against Kaipo Marshall and Jin Dassanayake at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Keitelman won in straight sets against Bode Vance, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Fernandez gave Richmond a 3-0 lead with a straight-sets win at No. 1 singles against Mascioli, 6-2, 6-0. Walsh clinched the win at No. 3 singles against Marshall, 6-3, 6-3.
Freshman Sebastian Miano (Barcelona, Spain) lost a close match at No. 5 singles against Teberikov, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-8). Miano lost the third set super tiebreaker, 10-8.
Wernink gave the Spiders a 5-1 lead after winning in three sets against Rodriguez, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6 (8-6). Wernink won the third set tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6) to earn the point.
In the final match, Erwin won in a third set super tiebreaker against Dassanayake, 6-7 (9-11), 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 4 singles. Erwin played a tight first set tiebreaker falling 11-9 and forced a third set super tiebreaker with a second set win 7-5. Erwin won the 10-point breaker, 10-6.
Richmond will host Virginia Wesleyan on Friday, March 26 at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
