
Richmond Falls Against Syracuse At VCU Bubble

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team fell behind after doubles and lost four singles matches in a 5-1 loss against ACC foe Syracuse Sunday at the VCU Bubble.
Richmond (1-2) lost the doubles point after dropping two of three matches. At No. 3 doubles, Miranda Ramirez and Guzal Yusupova earned a 6-1 win against senior Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) and freshman Andrea Campodonico (Asuncion, Paraguay).
At No. 2 doubles, senior Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) and senior Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) won against Zeynep Erman and Sofya Golubovskaya, 6-4.
In the deciding doubles match, Syracuse's No. 48 ranked doubles team of Kim Hansen and Sofya Treshcheva edged junior Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) and senior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados)
In singles action, Yusupova, ranked No. 64, won in straight sets against Dunbar, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Ramirez, ranked No. 80, earned a 7-6 (1), 6-0 win against Zlateva.
Owens earned the Spiders lone win at No. 3 singles against Treshcheva, 6-3, 6-3. Syracuse clinched the win after Hansen won in straight sets against Campodonico, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 4 singles. Giffenig lost at No. 5 singles to Polina Kozyreva, 7-6 (6), 6-1.
In the final match, freshman Justine Bryson (Tortola, Virgin Islands) lost the first set against Erman, 6-4 but the match went unfinished.
Richmond will head to Annapolis, Maryland for a road match at Navy on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 1 p.m.
