Spiders Pull Off Another Upset Advancing To A-10 Finals

ORLANDO, FL. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team continues its recent hot streak upsetting second-seeded George Washington, 4-1, in the Atlantic 10 semifinal Friday night at the USTA National Campus.
With Richmond leading 3-1, freshman Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway) clinched the victory with a third-set win against Xenia De Luna, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
The Spiders (10-9) won the doubles point after winning two of three doubles matches. Junior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) and sophomore Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles against Maria Siopacha and Melis Bayraktaroglu.
The Spiders clinched the doubles point after junior Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) and sophomore Adrienne Haynes (Asheville, N.C.) outlasted Victoria Kogan and De Luna, 6-4.
At No. 2 doubles, Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) fell 6-2 against Sara Grubac and Katarina Marinovikj.
In singles, Marshall won in straight sets against Grubac, 6-1, 6-2 to give Richmond a 2-0 lead. At No. 3 singles, Bayraktaroglu won in straight sets against Zlateva, 6-2, 6-3 to cut the lead to 2-1.
Dunbar earned a solid win against Siopacha, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Two matches went unfinished as Owens was trailing in the third set 7-5, 6-7 (6), 0-3 at No. 4 singles. Senior Ana Ramirez (Mexico City, Mexico) was in a second set tiebreaker 6-3, 6-6 at No. 6 singles.
Richmond will now face top seed cross-town rival VCU on Saturday, April 27, at 3 p.m. at the USTA National Campus. The match will be broadcasted on ESPN+
