
Erwin Gives Spiders Thrilling 4-3 Win Against Davidson

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team improved to 2-1 in Atlantic 10 play with a thrilling 4-3 win against Davidson Saturday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts. Freshman Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) clinched the match with a comeback win at No. 6 singles.
With the match tied at 3-3, Erwin forced a winner-take-all third set against Davidson's Thomas Mason after winning the second set 7-5. In the third set, Erwin almost fell behind 5-6 but was able to save multiple break points after being down 40-0 to storm ahead 6-5. Erwin broke serve to give Richmond a huge 4-3 victory winning 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.
"We have been playing these type of matches all year long and we were able to come away with another close one," head coach Houston Barrick said. "I am really proud of Campbell being able to stay patient and come away with a huge win for us."
The Spiders won the doubles point winning two of the three doubles matches. Erwin and junior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) earned a 6-3 win against Camden Mazzoni and Douglas Macintosh at No. 2 doubles.
Freshman Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and junior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) clinched the doubles point with a tough 6-4 win against Axel Fries and Matthew Rose, at No. 1 doubles.
Junior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) and freshman John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) were trailing 3-4 when the doubles point was won against Alexander Loope and Yash Parikh at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Walsh won in straight sets against Brooks Green, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5 singles. Senior Brice Polender (Lake Bluff, Ill.) lost against Sam Kavarana, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles.
Lovitt gave Richmond a 3-1 lead after winning 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4 singles against Mazzoni. Davidson tied the match at 3-3 when wins at No. 2 and No. 1 singles. Evans lost against Parikh, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2 singles and Fernandez lost a tough battle against Fries, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0, at No. 1 singles.
Richmond (10-4) will host a doubleheader against on Tuesday, March 26, against Southern Virginia (10:30 a.m.) and versus Depaul (2:30 p.m.) at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
