03/23/2019 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team remained unbeaten in Southern Conference play as the Spiders posted their first road league win with a 16-9 victory at Bellarmine in Louisville, Ky. Saturday. The victory improved Richmond to 6-3 on the year and 3-0 in league play.
The Spiders out-scored the Knights 10-2 over the final 31:57 of the game, including a 6-1 edge in the decisive third quarter. Richmond has out-scored its past two opponents by an 11-1 margin in the third quarter the last two weeks and is out-scoring league opponents by a 14-2 in SoCon play.
The Spiders had three players notch hat tricks in the victory with sophomores Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) and Mitch Savoca (Newtown, Conn.) each posted four goals while senior Teddy Hatfield (Summit, N.J.) finished with three goals. Drew Petkevich (Bethesda, Md.) and Tate Gallagher (Ardmore, Pa.) each added a pair of goals while freshman Shayne Grant (San Diego, Calif.) recorded his first career goal.
Lanchbury finished the game with four goals and two assists, marking the third time this year with six points in a game. He has scored at least three goals in eight out of nine games this year as he leads the team with 30 goals, just four shy of the Richmond single-season record held by Hatfield last year (34). Savoca scored a season-high four goals in the win, raising his season total to 12 goals.
Hatfield finished tied for the team lead with six points, scoring three goals and dishing out three assists. He raised his Richmond career records for both and now has 109 goals and 88 assists in his career. He has posted 197 career points, just three shy of the 200-point mark for his career.
Richmond and Bellarmine went back-and-forth for most of the first half, as the game was tied seven different times in the first 22 minutes of the game. The Knights took a 7-6 lead with 2:24 remaining in the first half on a Stephen Votto goal before the Spiders took control the contest. Lanchbury tied the game just 27 seconds later before Savoca sent Richmond into the locker room with an 8-7 lead with a goal with 8 seconds remaining.
The Spiders came out of the locker room and scored the first two goals of the third and out-scored the Knights 6-1 in the quarter. Hatfield kept the momentum going with a goal seven seconds into the second half while Savoca added his third at the 12:15 mark. After a Bellarmine goal, the Spiders scored five-straight goals to end any doubt in the game, taking a 15-8 lead with 10:58 remaining in the fourth. Gallagher score both of his goals during the stretch.
Senior Nick D'Amaro (Manorville, N.Y.) had his second-straight strong game on the face-off, converting 18-of-28 and posting 10 ground balls. Junior Jack Cook (Mechanicsville, Va.) added four ground balls while sophomore Jason Reynolds (Chester Springs, Pa.) led the team with three caused turnovers. Redshirt sophomore goalie Blake Goodman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made his second-straight start and recorded 10 saves in the win.
The Spiders continue their four-game road swing next Friday evening when they travel to Charlottesville, Va., for a meeting against No. 9 Virginia. The game will be aired on the ACC Network Extra and is set for a 7 p.m. face-off.
