RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team battling injuries and a long week of tennis fell at home against James Madison, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.

The Spiders (5-6) lost the doubles point for the third match in a row. Junior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) and junior Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) fell to Abby Amos and Daniela Voloh, 6-0, at No. 1 doubles.

At No. 2 doubles, Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) and Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) lost to Emma Peterson and Daria Afanasyeva, 6-1. In the final doubles match, sophomore Adrienne Haynes (Asheville, N.C.) and senior Ana Ramirez (Mexico City) fell 6-2 against Amanda Nord and Jona Roka, at No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, the Dukes took a 2-0 lead after Peterson won in straight sets against Ramirez, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5 singles. JMU led 3-0 after Voloh took down Owens, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 singles.

At No. 1 singles, Afanasyeva clinched win for JMU with a 7-5, 6-2 win against Marshall. Freshman Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway) fell short at No. 4 singles against Roka, 6-3, 6-4. JMU went ahead 6-0 after Nord won in straight sets against Haynes, 7-6 (3), 6-1, at No. 6 singles.

In the final match, Zlateva outlasted Amos, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (7), at No. 2 singles. Zlateva dropped the second set in a tiebreaker, 7-4, but bounced back to win the 10-point third set, 10-7.

Richmond will host George Washington in a key Atlantic 10 match on Saturday, March 23, at 2 p.m.
