
Richmond Edges College of Charleston, 4-3

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team earned a tough 4-3 win on the road at the College of Charleston Monday afternoon.
"It was our best doubles of the year after winning at all three positions," head coach Mark Wesselink said. "We played some solid tennis under pressure today. "I am very proud of Dessi, who played some of her best tennis of the season."
With the match tied at 3-3, it came down to No. 2 singles as junior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) earned a comeback win against Eva Nyikos, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Marshall was able to win the final two sets after dropping the first set.
The Spiders (5-3) took a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. At No. 3 doubles, junior Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) and senior Ana Ramirez (Mexico City) blanked Sarah Zachunke and Turner Yates, 6-0.
Richmond clinched the doubles point after Marshall and sophomore Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) won 6-2 against Christi Woodson and Anastasia Palaska at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles, Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) and Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) won 6-2 against Clara Errard and Lily LaBiche.
In singles action, the Spiders took a 2-0 lead after freshman Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway) won due to a retirement against Turner Yates at No. 5 singles. The College of Charleston made to 2-1 after La Biche won in straight sets against Owens, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles.
Richmond took a 3-1 lead after Zlateva earned a 6-2, 6-2, victory against Palaska at No. 3 singles. The Cougars cut the lead to 3-2 after Woodson defeated Dunbar, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 1 singles.
CofC tied the match at 3-3, after Ramirez lost a tight match against Catalina Medici, 7-6 (3), 6-1.
Richmond will remain in Charleston, South Carolina with matches against UMass (March 13) and Samford (March 14) this week.
