Richmond Seals Second-Straight 4-3 Win At UNCG
02/03/2019 | Men's Tennis
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team posted its second-straight 4-3 win of the weekend Sunday against UNCG. Junior Matt Fernandez clinched the match with a win at No. 3 singles.
"Today was a great example of what can happen when a team comes together and plays for each other," head coach Houston Barrick said. "What a gutsy weekend all around for our guys. As a coach, you can't ask for much more than two victories on the weekend both being 4-3 matches."
With the match tied at 3-3, junior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) gave the Spiders their second-straight win with a comeback 6-7 (1), 6-3, 7-6 (2) win at No. 3 singles against Roger Rogowski. Fernandez lost the first set 6-7, 1-7 in the tiebreak but bounced back to win the second set 6-3. Rogowski went ahead 5-2 in the third set but Fernandez battled to force a tiebreaker at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, Fernandez won 7-2 to give Richmond their third win of the season.
"Credit UNCG for battling throughout the whole match," Barrick said. "They came up big in a few spots that we needed but Matt (Fernandez) stepped up when we needed him."
The Spiders won the doubles point taking wins at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles. Freshman Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Fernandez lost to Nico Grewe and Ollie Palmer, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles. Richmond's Joe Nardini (Arlington, Va.) and junior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) won 6-3 at No. 2 doubles against Jack Burkill and Cooper Wyett.
In the deciding doubles match, junior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) and freshman John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) defeated Hugh Knapp and Rogowski, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, UNCG tied the match at 1-1 when Grewe won in straight sets against senior Brice Polender (Lake Bluff, Ill.), 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles.
Freshman Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) earned a 6-4, 6-3, win against Ian Melnik at No. 6 singles. Lovitt remained perfect on the weekend with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Burkill at No. 5 singles.
UNCG cut the lead to 3-2 when Knapp won a close match against Walsh, 2-6, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 4 singles. The Spartans tied the match at 3-3 when Palmer won in three sets against Evans, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.
