NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team was put to the test on Friday afternoon.

The Spiders battled with nonconference foe Old Dominion for the second time in as many years, but couldn't overcome the Monarchs, falling 7-0 in Norfolk.

"We faced another tough opponent today," head coach Mark Wesselink said after the match. "We competed better, and we're getting more aggressive in our doubles play."

Sophomores Kiana Marshall and Lyndell Giffenig teamed up at No. 2 doubles and took down ODU's Natalia Vlasova and Victoria Olivarez, 6-4, but the Monarchs squeaked by with the doubles point after winning on courts 1 and 3.

Old Dominion followed doubles play with a sweep in singles action. Sophomore Lea Owens came back her match by winning the second set, but was unable to log the point after dropping the tiebreaker and falling 6-3, 5-7 (7) to ODU's Yulia Starodubtseva.

Richmond has a brief break from action before returning to the court on February 9. The Spiders will face Temple in the VCU bubble at 3 p.m.
