Spiders Come Up Short at #3 West Virginia
09/10/2017 | Women's Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team put up yet another impressive defensive showing, but it would not be enough, as the Spiders dropped a nonconference road meeting with No. 3 West Virginia, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Mountaineers took an early 1-0 lead when Grace Cutler send a shot post Richmond goalkeeper Katie Brennan and into the inside left pocket in the second minute of play.
Â
West Virginia would rattle off 15 more shots in the half, but Brennan and the defense held the home squad off of the board for the remainder of the opening 45 minutes.
Â
The Spiders' best chance of the half came in the closing minutes, when senior Lexi Prillaman received a ball in the offensive half for a fast break, but the attacker sent the ball directly to the WVU keeper.
Â
The Mountaineers doubled their lead in the 57th minute with a shot from Heather Kaleiohi into the upper right corner. The hosts scored again in the 70th minute on a long shot from Sh'Nia Gordon to make the final score 3-0.
Â
Brennan finished with a career-high 14 saves in goal, just two shy of the program record. The Mountaineers outshot the Spiders, 34-3, and held a 5-1 corner kick advantage.
Â
The Spiders have a week until their next contest, hosting Old Dominion on Sunday, September 17, in the final nonconference matchup of the season. Kickoff at Robins Stadium is set for 6 p.m.
