Spiders’ Solid Effort Comes Up Short in Double Overtime Loss to ODU
09/17/2017 | Women's Soccer
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Despite another battle on the field, the University of Richmond women's soccer team fell just short on Sunday night at Robins Stadium.
After 101 minutes of play, Old Dominion was able to break through the Spider defense, as Kira Laurento sent the game-winner into the net in the second overtime period to give the Monarchs a 2-1 win.
Old Dominion got on the board early in the game to take a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute on a goal from Jacki Stroud. ODU's Iris Achterhof sent a corner kick low into the box for Stroud to strike past Richmond goalkeeper Katie Brennan and into the net.
The Spiders rebounded before the end of the half, as Alyssa Walker sent a ball across the field to fellow sophomore Brooke Beam, who then took a shot from 25 yards out that sailed past the Monarch goalkeeper to tie the game. It was Beam's first goal of the season.
Neither goalie made a save in the opening stanza, with both teams taking three shots.
The offense picked up on both sides of the field in the second half, but neither team could find the back of the net. The Spiders also saw a red card assessed in the 87th minute, forcing the hosts to play a man down for the remainder of the game.
The Monarchs rattled off nine shots to the Spiders' four in the second half, and Brennan kept ODU off of the scoresheet, stopping three shots to send the two teams into overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period that saw the Monarchs take eight shots and Brennan make six saves, Laurento's game-winner came just 1:19 into the second sudden-victory period.
ODU outshot the Spiders, 21-8, and held an 8-4 corner kick advantage. Brennan finished with nine saves for the Spiders.
Richmond is set to begin Atlantic 10 action on Thursday, September 21, when it plays host to 2016 A-10 regular-season champion Saint Joseph's. Kickoff at Robins Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m.
