Spiders Open A-10 Play with 5-2 Win At Saint Joseph's

PHLADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team saw an opportunity and capitalized, starting Atlantic 10 Conference play with a 5-2 win at Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon.
“This was a very good conference win for us,” head coach Mark Wesselink said. “Kiana (Marshall) & Gaby (Rosales) looked very solid, and Lyndell (Giffenig) stepped up and got us an important win.”
The Spiders continue to dominate in doubles play, and Friday's match was no exception, as they swept in doubles action to take an early 1-0 lead.
Rosales and Kelsey Williams took down Sarah Contrata and Katherine Devlin, 6-1, on court 3, before Dessislava Zlateva and Lea Owens defeated Maureen Devlin and Isis Gill-Reid at No. 2, 7-6 (5) to clinch the point. Marshall and Giffenig rounded out doubles play with a 6-4 win on court 1 over Claire Minnoe and Alex Zachem.
Richmond would continue its dominance in singles play, winning four-straight to clinch the win. Marshall started the singles scoring with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat on court 4 of Katherine Devlin, before Rosales took down Maureen Devlin, 6-2, 6-2 on court 2.
Giffenig clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mary-Margaret Ewens at No. 6, while Williams defeated Contrata, 6-3, 6-4 on court 5. The Hawks won on courts 1 and 3 to make the final score 5-2.
The Spiders will stay in Philadelphia to take on Villanova tomorrow at 11 a.m., before returning home for a Sunday matchup with Hampton at 11:30 a.m. on the Richmond courts.
