Spiders Come Up Short Against Delaware, 4-3

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team is young, but has continued to improve and compete throughout the season.
The Spiders showed their fight on Friday afternoon, but ultimately fell to Delaware in a close match, 4-3.
“Our doubles play continues to shine, but our consistency in singles has to improve,” head coach Mark Wesselink said after the match.
Richmond came out strong, sweeping doubles play to take a 1-0 lead over the Blue Hens. Lyndell Giffenig and Kiana Marshall dominated their opponents at No. 2, 6-2, before Gaby Rosales and Brittany Boys clinched the point with a 6-3 win in the No. 1 spot.
Dessislava Zlateva and Lea Owens then won their match, 7-5, to complete the sweep.
Singles play was very competitive, with three of the six matched going to a third and deciding set. Marshall was able to take down Annie Jaskulski at No. 4, 6-3, 6-2 after Delaware had tied the match with a win at No. 2.
The Blue Hens then took charge with wins on courts 5 and 3, before Boys won over Amanda Studnicki in the No. 6 position in comeback fashion, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. With the match tied at 3-3, Delaware was able to come away with a win at No. 1 to clinch the 4-3 win.
“It definitely hurt to lose Ana Ramirez to an injury today, as she was a strong position for us,” Wesselink added. “We have to bounce back quickly for tomorrow's match.”
The Spiders return to action on the Westhampton Courts on Saturday, when they host East Carolina. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
