02/13/2016 | Women's Tennis
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Despite the weather being cold, the University of Richmond women's tennis team stayed hot, picking up its third straight win with a 5-2 defeat of Navy on Saturday afternoon.
The Spiders are now 4-1 on the season with the only loss coming to nationally-ranked Virginia Tech.
Senior Katya Salas and junior Brittany Boys quickly won at the second doubles spot. Senior Anna Abadias Morales and sophomore Gaby Rosales fought through and won 7-5 at the top spot in the doubles lineup to secure the point for Spiders.
“The team is definitely improving on the doubles court. That point was crucial to getting us confidence going into singles today,” Head Coach Mark Wesselink said.
Rosales kept that momentum going into singles, rolling to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Navy's Kristine Rojo at #2 singles.
Junior Kelsey Williams continued her strong play, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3 over Navy's Sam Droop. Salas secured the victory for the Spiders with a 6-1, 6-3 win at #5 singles.
“Gaby was dominant at number two and Katya clinched the match at number five. Kelsey continues to be solid for us, winning again in straight sets today,” Wesselink added.
Freshman Ana Ramirez earned a hard-fought, three-set win at #6 singles to wrap up the scoring on the day for Richmond.
“Ana was really impressive today. She really battled and fought her way to the three set win,” Wesselink said.
The Spiders are back in action next Saturday, February 20 at UNC Greensboro. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
