Men's Lacrosse Sets Scoring Record In 21-3 Win

For the second time this season, Richmond men's lacrosse eclipsed the 20-goal plateau, again setting the school mark for scoring in a 21-3 win over visiting NJIT Monday afternoon at Robins Stadium in non-conference action. The win gives Richmond a 6-3 mark, already tying the win total from the 2014 inaugural season, while the first-year Highlanders program sits at 0-7.
Earlier in the day, Richmond learned is was again receiving votes in this week's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) coaches poll, the third week this season that the team was in the “Others Receiving Votes” category with a national poll.
The Spiders began the game with a shutout quarter, the ninth in program history and sixth of the season, jumping out to a 6-0 lead after the first 15 minutes. The Spiders led 14-1 at the half and posted 4-1 and 3-1 third and fourth quarters, respectively. Richmond won 17 of the 26 faceoffs, a season-high tally, and three away from the program record.
Redshirt senior Mickey Hofmeister (Williamsburg, Virginia / Jamestown HS) led the offensive attack with a season-high four goals in the victory. He added two assists to come one point shy of tying the school mark. He has scored a goal in 15 consecutive games and a point in his last 23.
This was the first time three players had a hat trick in a single game in UR's 26-game history. Richmond is now 6-0 when at least a pair of teammates scores three or more goals in a game.
Junior Brad Burnam (Nedrow, New York) posted three goals and two assists, his season high for both categories and one point away from tying his career high. It was his third three-goal game in his career.
Redshirt junior Alex Hatem (Syracuse, New York) also turned in a hat trick, the third for his career and first this season. He is third in program history with those three hat tricks.
A pair of Spiders scored their first career goal in the game. Sophomore Austin Cunningham (San Anselmo, California), freshman Austin Brown (Baltimore, Maryland) found the back of the net in the scoring barrage.
Starting goalie Benny Pugh (Powhatan, Virginia / Woodberry Forest School) played the first half of the contest and registered seven saves before giving way to freshman Dan Katzman (New York, New York) and later Henry Buonagurio (Duxbury, Massachusetts), who recorded three saves. Pugh got the win to improve his record to 6-3.
The three goals allowed are the second-fewest in program history.
The Spiders go back on the road for the second-straight Saturday, playing at No. 8 Virginia at 1 p.m.
